Bloggy Update 6/13

Posted by

Well, let’s get right to it, shall we?

I am TWO CHAPTERS away from finishing the 2nd revision of the new book, Rage. Since I have to go back to work on Monday (yeah…ick), I’ve really wanted to be “done” with round two before the 6:20am schedule kicks in again. Once I finish, I’ll set the manuscript aside for about 6 weeks before I go back and do revision #3. That will be the time where I really solidify the story, the characters, and pretty much complete it. Revision #4 (and beyond) will be more for clean up issues – spelling, punctuation, missed words, etc. Not that I won’t fix those in previous revisions, but I will go word by word to catch any problems and mistakes at that time. I literally raise the font to 140 or 150 percent in order to see every period and comma.

And speaking of work – yep. We’re going back. Monday, June 15, when I’ll be back to my usual 7:30am to 4pm schedule. The students are still doing summer classes from home at this point and in the fall, it’s supposed to be some kind of hybrid set -up (online, in-class, etc), but at this point, who knows? Things can change pretty fast when you’re not looking, so that might end up different as well. But for now, that’s the plan.

There’s also been some new Meet & Greet Authors and a new Spotlight artist posted too! If you’re behind, now’s the time to check them out!

As for author events? Well, I’ve signed up for one in October (in Champaign, Ill) and I am hoping that it happens and everything will have calmed down by then. If not, I guess we’ll deal with it, but keep an eyeball peeled for that one. It’s a “new one” for me (Dark History and Horror Convention), so I’m excited.

As for other newness? We bought a cat tree. Monkey loves it. Noodle is wary:

So, that’s about the size of things. Let me know how YOU are handling the summer so far. I love the commentary and sharing! πŸ™‚

  1. Thanks for sharing your process! Sounds really good. Do you first share the WIP with outside eyes, or an editor, after Revision #4? I love your tip to raise the point size to proofread… what a great idea. Seems like it would help to see it in a fresh way so the mind doesn’t gloss over what you’ve already read many times. Good luck going back to work, and finishing RAGE!

    1. Hi Ron. Thanks for writing! To answer your question, I DO share my writing with a select group of editors after revision #3. Then, I take what they have said and go back to the manuscript for revision #4. I normally don’t share the “finished” manuscript with folks until it’s a book πŸ™‚

And as for enlarging the font, you wouldn’t believe how many mistakes you can catch when you’re staring at a HUGE word! Yes, I find it helpful!

  2. Bond would LOVE that cat tree. While we were on vacation, my son’s cat was here with Bond and she takes over his cat tree every time. Hope going back to work went smoothly for you, Sue – and congrats on making so much progress with your book!

    1. Thanks so much, Teri. Monkey loves it, but Noodle will only scratch it. Work is weird because we are not open to the public and most everyone I talk to doesn’t really think we should be open at all. Weirdness.
